Cloud computing advances in drug discovery
With recent developments in cloud computing, and following significant investment in fibre-optic networks, SimuGen has developed an online analysis platform to facilitate a significant increase in computing performance. This increase in performance is predicted to be vital in coping with the ‘big data’ problems associated with life sciences discovery, which is set to intensify in the future.
Large scale data analysis on the web has always been a challenge due to the request response nature of web applications. SimuGen’s new cloud analysis platform will allow the company to handle larger datasets with more processing power, the result being extremely fast data analysis, and a real point and click feel to its web applications. This innovation also allows for a quick productisation of applications (Apps) customised to a customer’s needs.
By separating the web application service from the data analysis service, on a multi processor cloud, SimuGen has opened the gates on large-scale data analysis on the web.
The project’s success is due to the speed and bandwidth of the data analysis. This service can read, analyse, and present high quality graphics-rich output at an incredible rate allowing for more informed decision making. Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century: A Vision and a Strategy
Advances in molecular biology and toxicology are paving the way for major improvements in the evaluation of the hazards posed by the large number of chemicals found at low levels in the environment. The National Research Council was asked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to review the state of the science and create a far-reaching vision for the future of toxicity testing.
This book finds that developing, improving, and validating new laboratory tools based on recent scientific advances could significantly improve our ability to understand the hazards and risks posed by chemicals. This new knowledge would lead to much more informed environmental regulations and dramatically reduce the need for animal testing because the new tests would be based on human cells and cell components. Substantial scientific efforts and resources will be required to leverage these new technologies to realize the vision, but the result will be a more efficient, informative and less costly system for assessing the hazards posed by industrial chemicals and pesticides.
